right now in wisconsin, he would rather by obama than be romney. that's not to say it's safe for obama. it isn't. it's tight. >> larry, great to see you this morning. thank you. >> thank you. >> so when talking dollars and cents, the cost of hurricane sandy, that is still being tallied up. early strimts estimates bring it up to $50 million. the second is hurricane katrina where damages total $81 billion. when it comes loss of life, the numbers don't compare. 91 people are dead from sandy. from katrina, more than 1,800 across five different states. but what differences do we see when it comes to the government response? msnbc's melissa harriet is here to sound off on that, melissa ferry and i won't even bring up the name isaac. leave that alone. >> that's right. >> if there are models to compare and contrast how we've seen responses from candy to katrina, there are vast differences. >> yeah. i think what we want to do is, for example, recognize the comparisons you just made in dollars from the size to katrina to the size of sandy, that's one thing.

both iowa and wisconsin we've also heard that romney poll watcher volunteers were given misinformation about what kind of i.d. you need to have when you go to vote. they will actually be doing the job incorrectly when they get there. it's all a coincidence though, martin. i don't want to you think there's any kind of, you know, right wing conspiracy to any of that. >> i feel -- listening to karen finney i just feel better. but i do think this is bigger than this election. this is the oldest battle in american democracy. if you define democracy as everyone being able to technically vote, we are a very young democracy from just the civil rights era. if you define it as being able to vote without barriers, it's still indanger. >> i wish we had more time. stay with us. much more ahead. look, if you have copd like me, you know it can be hard to breathe, and how that feels. copd includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. much more ahead. spiriva helps control my copd symptoms by keeping my airways open for 24 hours. plus, it reduces copd flare-ups. spiriva is the only once-daily inhaled copd

governor romney said this in wisconsin. >> he said he was going to lower the unemployment rate down to 5.2%. today we learned it's 7.9%, that's 9 million jobs short of what he promised. >> speaking in ohio the president highlighted the spike in job creation. >> and today our businesses have created nearly 5.5 million new jobs and this morning we learned that companies hired more workers in october than at any time in the last eight months. >> joining us now, from washington, the man with all the answers, cnbc's amman jabbers. what's your assessment of this jobs report? >> it's definitely a strong jobs report, stronger than expected consensus was about 125,000 jobs, we saw 171,000. that was a surprise to the upside. in the morning wall street liked that, the dow futures up on that news, but politically i think the interesting thing here is that all the conspiracy theorists are gone back in their holes today, we haven't heard from all those folks and part of the reason because there's something in here for everybody. the republicans are saying this isn't good enough and the economy is at

three stops for the president and two for mitt romney who began his morning in wisconsin, another key rust belt battleground. congressman sherrod brown knows a little about buckeye state politics, and joan walsh is managing editor of salon.com and a political analyst. senator brown, sir, you know that state. i think you look like ohio. i think you are ohio. you're the labor guy. you're a blue collar kind of guy. you look like a senator from out there. you remind me of the late pete williams of new jersey, but you never had his problems. this is the question, why are you having a tough race? i don't get this guy running against you, this kid. is it all this money being pumped in there? what's made this even interesting, not for you. >> well, it's $31 million, they spent more money against me than any senate race in the country. we figure it's oil company money and wall street money. >> is this americans for prosperity, the koch brothers? >> it's all different groups. it's not a super pac, it's not disclosed money. it's directed by karl rove. he's directing the choir and this group come

look where romney is headed. according to nbc's first read, romney was in florida yesterday and virginia today. he'll also hit wisconsin, ohio, new hampshire, and colorado before the election. the president, this is an interesting map for him, he will be in wisconsin, where he is right now, with nevada, colorado, ohio, iowa, virginia, and florida. of course, they're sending their number one surrogates, the vp nominee, out where they're not going. is this the map, centered in ohio, virginia, and florida, is it still where the action is? >> it is for governor romney for sure. it's always been the case that governor romney needs to win florida, needs to win virginia, and pretty much needs to win ohio. even then he still needs to pick up another state somewhere along the way. you can see in his map that he's spending months of his time in florida, virginia, and ohio and a little bit of time in one of those other states that he thinks he might be able to get a pickup, whether that's wisconsin, whether that's colorado.

what is mitt romney's closing argument? his latest incarnation is that he's the guy who reaches across the aisle? >> we have to stop the dividing and the attacking and the demonizing. we've got to reach across the aisle, bring in good democrats with good republicans and finally do the people's business and put the politics behind. >> we just need to stop demonizing, don't we? well, old mittster, show leadership and pick up the phone and call mitch mcconnell. it's interesting for mitt romney to present himself as a guy who works across the aisle while president obama is being label by the tea partyers and everybody else in the right wing as nothing but the divider in chief. romney might want to pick up the phone, you know, give this guy a call, keynote speaker of the republican convention. governor christie spent the last four days praising the president of the united states in his partnership in storm preparation and response to the disaster. president obama passed, i think, the reach across the aisle test with flying color

it's the wisconsin backup. iowa, they visit twice. why? it's their nevada backup and vice versa, if one slips, they want to be able to hold up there. but i'm fascinated by also what romney's done in adding this pennsylvania on sunday. is it a sign of strength, or is it potentially a sign of weakness? is it oh, wait a minute, i'm missing -- is this sort of an on-side kick, hoping you recover it and you've still got to throw the bomb because if you pick off pennsylvania, then you don't have to worry about ohio anymore. and how much of this pennsylvania stop is about that versus a sign of strength? so to me, these candidates' schedules say a lot. the fact that he's spending one less event in ohio and deciding somehow one event in pennsylvania might make a difference, i think it says a lot about where they think ohio is. >> lawrence, if you look at the preponderance of public polls, it matches with what the obama campaign says. small but durable leads. what's the best case if you're the romney campaign from their point of view? say romney can
